Birthday Party

Today was Ian's first birthday party. Grandma Shirley, Grandpa Tony, Grandma Jo Ann, Grandpa Don, and Great-Grandma Stacer came to share Ian's special day. We started the day with Ian escaping a diaper change half dressed. He played like this for some time, dragging around his "tails" behind him. Note the big blue thing in this picture, it is the high chair covered in a sheet to make a fort.

Mason posing for a picture. He was a little out of sorts today with all the company, busyness, and toys everywhere. He got a present to unwrap also, a new stuffed rabbit.

Ian had an amazing pile of presents to open. He is so loved, and spoiled.
He didn't really get the whole idea of unwrapping presents. I would tear a little bit so he could see a bit of what was inside, but most of the time he wouldn't help me. I tried to involve him as much as possible. He was very distracted and just wanted to play with the fun stuff right away.
He got a drum pad toy, xylophone, See n' Say, and two trucks from Chris and I. Grandma Shirley and Grandpa Tony got him a Leap Frog drum, and real hand drum, and a tv remote control (he loves to play with the remote, such a typical boy.) Grandma Jo Ann and Grandpa Don got him a Power Wheels car, a barking dog toy, camo pants and camo boots. Great-Grandma Stacer gave him a gift of money. Grandma Karen gave him a outfit and a saving bond. Aunt Melissa sent Ian a savings bond. Sophie and Chuck sent Ian and outfit and fall jacket. Jim and Grace sent Ian several outfits. Dan and Chantel gave Ian a Leap Frog Spin and Sing Alphabet Zoo toy and a Dr. Seuss book.
It was so cute to see Ian get so excited for his new toys.
He just wanted to play and play. Mason did his best to help us open the gifts too. What a good helper.
Some people at work asked me why I would get my own kid noisy toys. Well, Ian loves music more than he loves anything else. Why wouldn't I support and encourage that. If it bothers me I can always get ear plugs. The benefits to Ian will far outweigh any discomfort to me.
His first ride in the power wheels was a bit of a surprise for Ian. When Don pressed the button and it moved forward Ian's eyes got as big as saucers. He wasn't sure what to think of that thing. Once he has a chance to try it out outside I think he is going to love it.
Playing with his bounty of toys. Our family and friends are so generous. Thank you so much for making Ian's first birthday so special

My attempt at making Ian a pirate cake was pretty pathetic. Chris called it the Leaning Tower of Pisa with a bad paint job. I didn't want my baby's first cake to be so ghetto looking so Chris went out and bought a cake at Meijer when he picked up our pizza. This cake was MUCH better. The firetruck even matched Ian's birthday outfit that Sophie sent for him. The cool candles that spelled Ian's name and the number one were from Grandma Shirley and Grandpa Tony.
During his birthday song Ian dug right into the cake, you can see the handful of frosting in this picture. He was very unhappy to have a dirty hand after that.
My little boy doesn't seem to enjoy getting dirty. He wouldn't get into the cake and ice cream, and when he did get it on his hands he held them up to me like he was saying "It's on me, get it off!"
The slightly scared face in the picture above might have had something to do with this...everyone taking pictures of him and crowed around watching. I think he had a little stage fright.
He ate a good amount of cake and some ice cream before deciding he was done. I cleaned him up and he went right back to playing with all his new toys.
Since my parents were up for the whole weekend in a hotel with a pool we took Ian for what could have been his first swim.

He was so cute just hanging out in the hotel room with his towel and swim diaper.
If that face was any cuter I don't think I could stand it. Ian must have been a model in a former life, he sure can work it for the camera when he feels like it.
I dare to put a picture of me in a swimsuit on the Internet. Please try to hide your disgust. The pool experience did not go very well at all. Ian was absolutely terrified and probably a little cold. I dipped his toes in the water and he let out a howl and I think he would have climbed onto my head if he could have. He did not want anything to do with that water. No way. No how. Oh well maybe another time in a pool that is a bit warmer. The room was so humid it fogged the camera. You can imagine my disappointment that a video of me in a swimsuit is foggy. Oh shucks. Too bad about that.
